The varistors have the advantage over diodes (Transient suppressor) that, like they can absorb energy transient (even higher) but also can suppress positive and negative transients.
The varistors provide a reliable and cost effective protection against transient high voltage can be produced, for example, by lightning, switching or electrical noise in DC power lines or AC. When a transient, the varistor changes its resistance to a high value to another very low value. The transient is absorbed by the varistor, thereby protecting the components sensitive circuit.
